How to find Seguin Island Light Station:
Seguin Island Light Station is located approximately two miles out from the mouth of the Kennebec River, Seguin Island is part of Georgetown Island in Sagadahoc County. It is not easy to access, but, once there you will find the trip is well worth it. From atop the island there are some of the most spectacular views on the Maine coast. On a clear day, and the fact that you are 180 feet high off the water, you can see Casco Bay and some of the city of Portland 20 miles to the west, Mount Washington 95 miles to the northwest and Monhegan Island 23 miles to the east. Seasonal Caretakers have remarked how much fun they have watching the fireworks at various communities during Fourth of July celebrations.
If you plan to visit Seguin in your private boat, we highly recommend the use of NOAA Chart 13295, "KENNEBEC AND SHEEPSCOT RIVER ENTRANCES" to assist you into the cove. The map shows Seguin Cove is "NO ANCHOR, submerged cable area". Please do not anchor in Seguin Cove. Other publications with useful information on how to navigate the waters around the island are A CRUISING GUIDE TO THE NEW ENGLAND COAST and the UNITED STATES COASTAL PILOT. In the cove, there are plenty of moorings available. Please be aware that you use the moorings at your own risk. As Seguin Island has no dock, you will have to bring a dinghy or swim ashore. The beach is exposed from low to 3/4 high tide. Please remember the smoothed rocks at high tide are unstable and slippery.
Once you
have arrived on the Island:
Search out
the caretakers who are there from Memorial Day through Labor Day. They will be
more than happy to take you on a guided tour of the tower to see the Lens,
through the Museum, and answer any questions you may have. Presently there is no charge to
visit the island, but donations are gratefully accepted. Lighthouse pictures and
memorabilia maybe purchased in the gift shop. We ask that you
remove your own bottles and trash. Also, dogs are allowed on the island but, due
to the nesting migratory sea bird colonies, please keep them leashed and pick-up
after them.
There is a Composting Toilet Facility available on the bottom of the island for public use.
Viewing
from On-Shore:
Seguin Island maybe be
seen from a number of locations along the coast. At the end of Southport Island,
Seguin may be seen at the Town Landing at Newagen at a distance of 4 nautical
miles. From Ried State Park in Georgetown, Seguin is 3 nautical miles, also see Seguin from the mainland is at Popham Beach State Park. Seguin is at a
distance of 2 1/2 nautical miles. Over 10,000 homes have a view of Seguin Island
and many possess high powered optical viewing equipment. You're never really
alone on Seguin as there are hundreds of interested viewers watching. In 1995 an
Urchin Diver was stranded on Seguin, with no communications he raised the US
Flag upside down and within 10 minutes the Coast Guard was notified by an
on-shore viewer saving his life.
